Question

The question of interest is how much advantage (if any) is given to the team that wins the coin flip at the start of the sudden death overtime period. Assume that the overtime games played during this period can be viewed as a sample of all possible NFL overtime games.

The winner of the coin flip has gone on to win 240 of the 428 games where a winner is determined in overtime.

Q: Does the data above provide sufficient evidence to conclude that the team winning the coin flip has an advantage in overtime games?

Complete the full hypothesis test as shown in video lectures (this is not optional, but required) :
Step 0: including validate any assumptions for the appropriate test
Step 1: Setup the pair of hypothesis include a statement of what tailed test is appropriate
Step 2: state alpha level (if not given use alpha=0.05)
Step 3: Calculate the test statistic and give the corresponding p-value
Step 4: Give the decision of whether to Reject Ho or Not Reject Ho (with support to why)
Step 5: Give the final conclusion (in context of the problem in sentence form).

Explanation / Answer

we will use normal approximation of binomial distribution as sample size is large enough, and fullfill central limit theorum.

1) null hypothesis: p=0.5; i.e there is no advantage

alternate hypothesis: p>0.5; i.e there is advantage

2) alpha level not given we consider it as 0.05.

3) here p=0.5

and phat =240/428 =0.561

and n=428

std error =(p(1-p)/n)1/2 =0.024

therefore test stat z=(phat-p)/std error =2.5135

and corresponding p value =0.006

4) as p value is less then 0.05 ; we reject null hypothesis.

5)final conclusion: there is sufficient evidence that the team winning the coin flip has an advantage in overtime games
