Question
Problem 20.51
Two high-current transmission lines carry currents of 25.0 A and 75.0 A in the same direction and are suspended parallel to each other 45.0 cm apart.
Part A
If the vertical posts supporting these wires divide the lines into straight 20.0 m segments, what magnetic force does each segment exert on the other?
Part B
Is the force found in part (A) attractive or repulsive?
Problem 20.51

Part A
If the vertical posts supporting these wires divide the lines into straight 20.0 m segments, what magnetic force does each segment exert on the other?
F= NPart B
Is the force found in part (A) attractive or repulsive?
Explanation / Answer
Here ,
I1 = 25 A
I2 = 75 A
d = 45 cm = 0.45 m
L = 20 m
magnetic force acting on each sagment = u0 * I1 * I2 * L/(2pi * d)
magnetic force acting on each sagment = 4pi *10^-7 * 25 * 75 * 20/(2pi * 0.45)
magnetic force acting on each sagment = 0.0167 N
the magnetic force acting one each wire is 0.0167 N
b)
as the current in the wire is same direction
force is attactive
