Question

You want to investigate a claim that women are more likely than men to dream in color. You take a random sample of men and a random sample of women and ask whether they dream in color, and compare the proportions of each sex that dream in color.

Suppose we observed a statistically significant difference in the sample proportions who dream in color (small p-value). Below are two possible explanations for this observed difference. Which do you consider to be the more plausible (believable or reasonable) explanation for the observed result?

a. Men and women in your community do not differ on this, but by chance alone the random sampling led to the difference we observed between the two groups

b. Men and women in your community differ on this issue

c. (a) and (b) are equally plausible explanations based on our study results

Explanation / Answer

Option C is correct.

a) A can also be true. The confidence interval we mention says that the sample repressent the population with 1-(alpha) % confidence. So there might be chances that the sample may not represent the true population.

b) If the sample represent the true population, we can say that Men and women in your community differ on this issue
