Question
Be sure to have the units in moles of air/min
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has set the limit on the maximum percentage of carbon dioxide (CO2) in air a worker can breathe at 0.500% by mole. If dry ice (solid CO2) is sublimating (becoming a gas) in a room at a rate of 0.960 mol/min, what is the minimum rate that fresh air has to be supplied to the room so that the concentration of CO2 in the room doesn't exceed 0.500% by mole? Assume the room is well mixed, and the volume of the solid dry ice does not change.Explanation / Answer
mol percentage of CO2 in fresh air = 0.038 %.....
let the volume of fresh air be supplied = v mol/min.....
therefore , mole of CO2 in fresh air = v*0.038/100 = 0.00038 * v
now from mass balance,..... mole of CO2 / total mole *100 = 0.5...
or (0.96+0.00038v) / (v+0.96) *100 = 0.5....or v=206.75 mol/min
