Question
In one study, it was necessart to draw a representative sample ofJapanese-Americans resident in San Francisco.
The procedure was as follows. After consultation with representative figures in
the Japanese community, the four most representative blocks in the Japanses area
of the city were chose,
All persons resident in those four blocks were taken for the sample. However, a
comparison woth Census data show that the sample did not include a high-enough
proportion of
Japanese with college degrees. How can this be explained?
Explanation / Answer
The sample in question is not a simple random sample, so we do not necessarily expect it to be representative of the population as a whole. Even random samples, however, may differ from the population due to natural sampling variation.
