Question

1. What is meant in the video by the term “solar nebula”? What shape do scientists think it had?
2. How would larger and larger rocky bodies form from this nebula?
3. Where is the asteroid belt?
4. Why do we have to use evidence from meteorites and not direct evidence from the Earth itself for the earliest period of Earth history?
5. What two things combined to make the early Earth extremely hot?
6. What is meant by “the iron catastrophe”? Was it a bad thing or a good thing? Explain.
7. How do scientists think the moon formed?
8. Why are small pieces of the mineral zircon so important for Earth scientists? Hint: consider their age.
9. Based on the oxygen isotopes found within them, what temperature do the zircon crystals indicate for the rocks at the time?
10. Where could the water that fills our ocean basins have come from? Give two possible sources. Which do you think is more likely?

Explanation / Answer

1) The concentrated intersteller dust & hydrogen cloud contracted under its own gravity and the solar system with the Sun in the hot dense center is formed whereas the remainder of the cloud formed a swirling disk called of the solar nebula. We can say that solar nebula is a rotating flattened disk of gas and dust in which the outer part of the disk became planets while the center bulge part became the sun.

2) Most of the scientist accepts that the process by which planets are formed is accretion in which the planets began as dust grains in orbit around the central protostar. Through direct contact, these grains formed into clumps up to 200 metres in diameter, which in turn collided to form larger bodies.

3) The asteroid belt is a region of space between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter where most of theasteroids in our Solar System are found orbiting the Sun. The asteroid belt probably contains millions of asteroids.

4) We have to use the evidences from meteorites & not directly from earth itself because at the time of formation most of the earth was in molten form & Earth's oldest rocks have been recycled and destroyed by the process of plate tectonics. So, the scientist are using the concept that solar system & earth were formed at the same time & of the same age.
