Question
A fully loaded Boeing 777 commercial aeroplane with a mass of 316.4 tonnes is at one end of the runway and about to take off. Assume that the plane starts from rest with constant acceleration until it reaches the take-off speed of 86.1 ms-1. The B777 uses two Rolls Royce Trent turbofan jet engines each developing 458 kN thrust at full power. Note that 1 tonne ? 1000 kg. Neglect air resistance and friction between the tires and the runway.
Calculate the length of the runway, in metres, required for take-off, giving your answer to 3 decimal places.
Explanation / Answer
Here mass of the airplane = 316.4 tons = 316400 Kg
Force applied = ma = 2*458*10^3 N
Therefore
Acceleration = a = (2*458*10^3)/(316400)
= 2.895 m/sec^2
v^2 - u^2 = 2as
Therefore
s = (86.1^2 - 0^2)/(2*2.895)
s = 1280.347 m
