Question

Mark must buy four new tires for his car. He is considering buying tires that are $25 a piece more than his regular brand, because the higher priced tires are supposed to increase his miles per gallon by 20%. If the tires are good for 48,000 miles and Mark drives an average of 1000 miles per month, gas costs $2.50 per gallon over the next 4 years, and Mark's car gets 30 miles to the gallon now (on the old tires), should Mark purchase the more expensive tires? Note: please show me how u got the answer.

Explanation / Answer

Mark will drive 48,000 miles in next 4 years
gallons of gas needed (regular brand) = 48,000 / 30 = 1600 gallons
Total cost of gas = 1600 * 2.50 = $4,000
On regular brand tires Mark will spend $4,000 on gas.

New tires give 20% more miles to the gallon = 30 + 30*0.2 = 36 mpg
Gallons of gas needed (expensive tires) = 48,000 / 36 = 1333.333 gallons
Cost of gas = $3333.33
On Expensive tires Mark will spend $3,333.33 on gas. Plus he will pay $100 more (4*25 for 4 tires) he will still save $566.67.

Mark Should purchase Expensive Tires.
