Indicate the function of: Xylem Phloem C How are ferns better adapted to terrestrial life than mosses?

Explanation / Answer

1 a.

1. Generation producing spores sprophyte.

Sporophyte occurs when an egg and sperm fertilise and produce zygote . Therefore they contain diploid number of chromosome, which then undergoes spore production by meiosis.

Generation producing egg and sperm gametophyte.

Gametophyte is a formation of haploid egg and sperm in Moss. Eggs are produced in archegonia and sperm in another idea.

3. Dominant generation gametophyte.

In Moss plants and other bryophytes gametophyte is a dominant and it is also longer phase of their life cycle. Production of haploid set of Gametes occurs in this stage ( egg and sperm). It also does not require any nutrients for its production.

4. Attaches gametophyte to soil Rhizoids.

Rhizoids are considered as a pseudo roots that helps in attachment of gametophyte to soil in most of the non vascular plants. Their function is similar to that of the root (i. e ) absorption of water and minerals from soil.

5. Substance required for sperm transport water.

In order to produce spores the sperm must fertilise the egg which cannot be done without the presence of water. Sperm has two flagella and it swim through water and reaches egg and fertilise them.

2. C

Though ferns are non flowering plants and their reproduction process is similar to that of the mosses yet they produces true leaves , root and stem like a terrestrial plant. They are characterised under pteridophytes which is a vascular plants.
