Leadership in Health Care Administration.

Leadership can be described as the traits and behaviour of a person when directing the activities of a group toward a common goal. The fundamental aspects of the leadership role include influencing group activities and coping with change. The crucial problem in managing the healthcare system is that most theories on leadership are not concerned with the healthcare context but were usually developed for the business setting and then applied to healthcare. In order to become a successful leader, the healthcare administrator should develop their own styles incorporated with the theories.

The leadership skills of the healthcare administrator are very important to demonstrate to future employers when looking for a position. These leadership skills will support a healthcare administrator be successful at work along with right education and experience to meet the qualifications and requirements of a position.

The contemporary leadership styles include:

1. Leading by example: being an example of the qualities and traits that can create a positive work environment and help an organization meet its goals. The qualities include honesty, ethics, showing and giving respect, being confident, and having integrity while making fair decisions based on the betterment of the organization and the community. In the healthcare industry, all employee irrespective of their position should concentrate on the positive implementation of practices that lead to the best possible patient care and care delivery. When handling situations that require ethical decision making and mutual respect employees will follow the lead of an administrator when handling the issue.

2. Leading with Knowledge:

Understanding of the healthcare system and the specific functions and operations of individual organizations is another leadership. With knowledge of every aspect of health care system, the healthcare administrators are able to make the decisions needed to attain the organizational goals and encourage a team of employees.

3. Servant leadership: A perfect leader must be the good servant, then only he can succeed.

4. Transformational leadership: Transformational leader manages employees by collaborating employee goals with the leader’s goals. So that the employees start focusing on the company’s well-being rather than on what is best for them as individual employees.

5. Transactional leadership: Makes sure that the employees exhibit the right behaviours because the leader provides resources in exchange. [1]

6. Rewarding leadership: Employees gets motivated by the rewards for the desired actions.

7. Leadership by exception: Leaving employees to utilize their own methods to achieve goals. The possible problems can be predicted and removed in advance or the leader can wait until something goes wrong.

As a leader in the healthcare industry, the healthcare administrator has to develop laws or policies to protect employees from discrimination.

The disciplinary process may include reprimanding, demoting or terminating them depends on the severity of their offence.

As a new leader must fully understand the functions of the organization. So that she can implement change with confidence. The most important part of a function of the organization is policymaking. The healthcare administrator can impact the changes by participating in policymaking.

Strategic Leadership ensures the active participation of all employees in voluntary decision making that enhance the prospects for the organisation's long-term success while maintaining long-term financial stability. The leadership approaches will influence the vision and direction of growth and the future success of an organization. To aid successful change, the managers need the skills and ability for both strategy formulation and implementation. [3] The effective policies made by the group of experts will help an organisation to function efficiently.

The advancement of technology made the communication of decision and policies easy and convenient. Peer to peer and vertical communications are more easy by the use of information technologies. The administrator can use technologies like emails, WhatsApp, video conferencing, electronic bulletins etc. to communicate the policies with the employees. This will make the communication hassle free and effective.
