Question

1) A diver hovers 2.00 meters below the surface of a still freshwater lake and shines a laser pointer upwards to

alert her crew as to her location.

(a) What is the diameter of the circle on the surface that she can trace out with the laser pointer to illustrate her location?

(b) If she descends deeper underwater, does the diameter of the circle increase, decrease, or remain the same?

2) In a double slit interference experiment, which of the following action(s) would cause the fringe spacing

to increase?

i. Increasing the wavelength of the light

ii. Increasing the slit spacing

iii. Increasing the distance to the viewing screen

iv.Submerging the entire experiment under water

Explanation / Answer

Given,

Distance, d= 2 m

a) As condition for total internal reflection is:

n1 sin90 = n2 sin(theta-c)

theta-c = sin^-1(n1/n2) = sin^-1(1/1.33) = 48.75 degrees

Using trigonometry

tan(theta-c) = r/d

r = d tan(theta-c) = 2 x tan48.75 = 2.28

D = 2 x 2.28 = 4.56 m

Hence, D = 4.56 m

b)As we see that the dismater is directly proportional to the depth, so as she decends the diameter will increase.

So, INCREASES.
