The sample, which is placed on the large cylinder, has an area of 4.0 cm2. What is the pressure on the sample if = 320N is applied to the lever? Express your answer to two significant figures and include the appropriate units.

Explanation / Answer

Force on small cylinder = F*2L/L = 640 N


Pressure = 640/(pi*0.02^2/4) = 2.04*10^6 Pa


Pressure in the larger cylinder is same as the smaller.

SO, force on the sample = 2.04*10^6 * pi*0.1^2 /4 = 16000N


Pressure on sample = 16000/(4*10^-4) = 4*10^7 Pa
