Question

A 3.00kg  stone is sliding to the right on a frictionless horizontal surface at 5.50m/s   when it is suddenly struck by an object that exerts a large horizontal force on it for a short period of time. The graph in the figure (Figure 1) shows the magnitude of this force as a function of time.

A) What impulse does this force exert on the stone?

B) Just after the force stops acting, find the magnitude of the stone's velocity if the force acts to the right.

C) Just after the force stops acting, find the direction of the stone's velocity if the force acts to the right. (right or left)

D) Just after the force stops acting, find the magnitude of the stone's velocity if the force acts to the left.

E) Just after the force stops acting, find the direction of the stone's velocity if the force acts to the left. (right or left)

Please show all work and equations so I can understand what is going on. Thanks!

Explanation / Answer

A) Impulse = F * t = 2.5*10^3 *1* 10^-3= 2.5 Ns

B) change in momentum = impulse acted

if the force acts to the right.

as the direction of impulse is same as that of initial motion.

Impulse is taken as +ve

3* v - 3*u = 2.5

3*(v-5.5)= 2.5

magnitude of the stone's velocit,

v = 2.5/3 + 5.5

v = 6.333m/s

C)direction of motion remains the same as the direction of impulse is same as that of initial motion.

hence direction of the stone's velocity will be towards RIGHT.

D)if the force acts to the left.

as the direction of impulse is opposite to that of initial motion.

Impulse is taken as -ve.

using again,

change in momentum = impulse acted

3* v - 3*u = -2.5

3*(v-5.5)= -2.5

magnitude of the stone's velocit,

v = -2.5/3 + 5.5

v =4.6667 m/s.

E] as we can see magnitudde of impulse is not enough to change the direction.

Hence , Direction will remain the same and that wil be towards RIGHT.
