Question

Two crates, one with mass 2.00 kg and the other with mass 8.00 kg sit on a frictionless surface connected by a light rope. A person pulls on the heavier box with a horizontal force. See Figure P4.43 on p. 131 of the text for a similar, although not identical, situation. The force applied to the heavier box causes the entire system (set of boxes) to accelerate horizontally with a magnitude of 2.00 m/s2. (a) Draw a clear free body diagram for the 2 kg box. (b) Draw a clear free body diagram for the 8 kg box. (c) The entire system accelerates together, which means that the 2 kg box has the same acceleration as the entire system. Use this information to find the magnitude of each of the forces on the 2 kg box. (d) The 8 kg box also has the same acceleration as the entire system. Use this information to find the magnitude of each of the forces on the 8 kg box.
