Question
Two converging lenses with f1 = 27 cm and f2 = 37 cm are located 1.50 m apart as shown in the figure below. An object is placed 53 cm in front of the lens on the left.
Find the location and size of the image produced by the first lens.

(b)Where is the image produced by the second lens?
What is the overall magnification of the final image?

|distance| cm location ---Select--- to the right of the lens to the left of the lens
What is the overall magnification of the final image?
Explanation / Answer
a)
1/v = 1/f - 1/u
= 1/27 - 1/53
v = 55 cm
The image formed by the first lens is 55 cm. This is right to the first lens.
Magnification of the first lens, m1 = -v/u = -55/53 = 1.04
b)
The image formed by the first lens is nothing but the object of the second lens.
So the object distance for the second lens is, u = 150 - 55 = 95 cm
1/v = 1/f - 1/u
= 1/37 - 1/95
v = 61 cm
The image formed by the second lens is 61 cm. This is right to the second lens.
Magnification of the second lens, m2 = -v/u = -61/95 = -0.64
Magnification of the combined lens arrangement, M = m1 * m2 = 0.7
