Question
Two conflicting definitions of absolute poverty: which is correct? On poverty.org.uk: Absolute poverty refers to a set standard which is the same in all countries and which does not change over time. An income-related example would be living on less than $X per day.
On BBC (in UK): Absolute poverty is defined as living below 60 per cent of the 2010-11 median income, adjusted for inflation.
I don't understand. I've read that absolute poverty is measured the same globally: living under $1/2 a day so how is it that in the UK it uses a relative measure to measure absolute poverty!!
Explanation / Answer
The world absolute poverty based on the world bank is fixed as $1.25 a day. But developed countries have different definition. In the US it is about $1,000 a month.
