Question
A town is in demand of 800kW of electric power at 220v is situated 15km away from an electric plant
generating power at 440V.The resistance of the two wire line carryingis 0.5ohms per km.The town gets
power form line through a 4000-220V step down transformer at a sub station in town.
a) Estimate the line power loss in the form of heat
b) How much power must the plant supply, assuming there is negligible power loss due to leakage?
c) Characterize the step up transformer at the plant.
Please give correct answers of these questions and if possible explain a little bit.
Explanation / Answer
Line resistance = 30*0.5 = 15 ohms [As resistance wire in two way wire going and coming out of city]
Rms current in line = 800*1000/4000 = 200A
a) Line power loss = I*I*R = 200*200*15 = 600kW [By Formula H= I*I*R]
b) Power supply by plant in order to get negligible loss = 800+600 = 1400kW
c) Voltage drop on the line = 200*15 = 3000V
The step up transformer at the plant is 440V-7000V
