Question
A tennis ball of mass 0.4Kg rebounds from a tennis racquet. The balls speed approaching the racquet is 25m/s and it's speed leaving the racquet (in the opposite direction from it's approaching speed) is 35m/s. The force experienced by the ball during it's time in contact with the tennis racquet was 1000N.
A) What was the force experienced by the tennis racquet during it's time in contact with the ball?
B) What was the momentum of the tennis ball before it hit the racquet?
C) What was the change in momentum of the tennis ball after it was hit by racquet (as compared with it's momentum before it was hit)?
D) How long was the ball and tennis racquet in contact with each other?
Explanation / Answer
A) from newton's 3 rd law action = - reaction
force experienced by the racquet = -1000N
B) Piniial = m*u = 0.4*25 = 10 kg m /s
C) change in momentum = m(v-u) = 0.4*(-35-25) = -24 kg m/s....opposite to the it's initial momentum
D) From newton's second law F = rate of chsnge of momentum
F = 24/t
but F = 1000N
t = 24/1000 = 24 ms = 0.024 s
