Question
Two crates, one with mass 4.00 kg and the other with mass 6.00 kg, sit on the frictionless surface of a frozen pond, connected by a light rope. A woman wearing golf shoes (so she can get traction on the ice) pulls horizontally on the 6.00 kg crate with a force Fthat gives the crate an acceleration of 1.55 m/s2.
What is the acceleration of the 4.00 kg crate? Draw a free-body diagram for the 4.00 kg crate. (Do this on paper. Your instructor may ask you to turn in this work.) Use that diagram and Newton's second law to find the tension T in the rope that connects the two crates.Explanation / Answer
a) As both the crates will move together , acceleration of 4 kg crate is also equal to 1.55m/s2
(b) T = 4 * 1.55
= 6.2 N
(c)F - T = 6 * 2.4=9.3
F - 6.2 = 9.3
F = 15.5 N
So F>T
d) F is solved above
