Question
A typical human eye is nearly spherical and usually about 2.5 cm in diameter. Suppose a person first looks at a coin that is 2.3 cm across and located 30.0 cm from her eye and then looks up at her friend who is 1.8 m tall and 3.25 m away.
A) Find the approximate size of each image (coin and friend) on her retina. (Hint: Just look at rays from the top and bottom of the object that pass through the center of the lens.)
B) Are the images in part (a) upright or inverted and are they real or virtual?

Explanation / Answer
using property of triangles
width1/distance1 = width2/distance2
=> 2.3/30 = x/2.5
=> x = 0.191666667 cm( size of coin on retina)
using property of triangles
width1/distance1 = width2/distance2
=> 1.8/3.25 = x/2.5
=> x = 1.3846153846 cm( size of friend on retina)
B) the images are real and inverted
