The puck is initially orbiting with speed vi = 1.7 m/s in a circle of radius ri = 0.31 m. The cord is then slowly pulled from below, decreasing the radius of the circle to r = 0.13 m.


(a) What is the puck's speed at the smaller radius?


(b) Find the tension in the cord at the smaller radius.


(c) How much work is done by the hand in pulling the cord so that the radius of the puck's motion changes from 0.310 m to 0.130 m?


Explanation / Answer

a)conserving ngular momentum,

mvr=constant

or 1.7*0.31=v*0.13

or v=4.05 m/s

b)tension=mv^2/r

=0.052*4.05^2/0.13

=6.561 N

c) Work done=0.5m(v1^2-v2^2)

=0.5*0.052(4.05^2-1.7^2)

=0.3513 J
