If the pol A of E.coli is mutated such thatit lacks 3' - 5' activity the following effects are possible on acell or on the organism as a whole: The role of pol A's 3' - 5' exonuclease activity isto remove any mismatched bases from the 3' end. So if mismatched bases are left and so the mistakes in the DNAcannot be rectified. Hence the rate of replication may not be altered much.It maybe a little fast as there is no proofreading function.       The effect on the phentypedepends on the position of the mismatched bases.If it is in animportant gene the function of the gene is lost.If the gene codesfor the phenotypic characteristics then the change in phenotype isseen. hope this helps
