Chromosomes replicate and forms a copy of itself which are connected to each other by centeromere. This structure is visible during metaphase. But These chromatids get separated during anaphase.

Condensation of chromosomes happens during Mitosis phase. It is because of this condensation process chromosomes are visible during m phase only.
