For this exercise, we will examine the dependence of the current flow through a resistor when the voltage across the resistor is varied. The circuit we will be using is shown in Figure 1. A dc power supply is connected to a variable resistor which has a sliding contact point. A resistor with an unknown resistance is then connected to the sliding point of the variable resistor so that the voltage (V) across the resistor can be changed by sliding the contact point on the variable resistor. An ammeter (A) is connected in series with the resistor so that the amount of current flowing through the resistor can be determined at the same time.
