Question

a) What is the direction of the induced current (viewed from above): Clockwise or Counterclockwise?

b)What is the direction of the induced magnetic field on the rod: Left, Right, Up or Down?

c)Find the magnitude of the magnetic force and the net-force on the rod

d) Find the magnitude of induced current and induced EMF

e)What is the constant (final) velocuty of the rod?

f) Find the magnitude of the electric field in the rod

e) Find the final velcoty of the rod if the wires in the angle are tilted by an angle theta = 30 degrees with the vertical

Explanation / Answer

a)Using the left hand rule, velocity is down, magnetic field is inwards, so force on +ve charges is to the right.
Therefore current flows clockwise.

b) induced mag field is becuase of the flowing current, and is directed into the page

c) magnetic force is F=BiL acting upwards and mg acting downwards.

but they are equal and opposite, so the magnetic force=mg=0.196N

net force is 0.

d)

i=V/R where V=BvL

so in terms of v, magnetic force=B2L2v/R=mg

4*v*10-4 =0.196

v=490m/s

V=9.8V, therefore i=9.8A
