Question

a) What do you believe is the probability that an American will win the 100 m breaststroke at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics? Explain how you arrived at your conclusion. b) What do you believe is the probability that an American will not win the 800 m freestyle in Tokyo? Explain how you arrived at your conclusion. c) Using your probabilities from (a) and (b), what do you believe the probability that an American will win the 100 m breaststroke or will not win the 800 m freestyle? d) What definition of probability do the above questions entail?

Explanation / Answer

a) The probability of america will win the 100 m breaststroke at the 2020 tokyo olympics(men) is

Total number 100m breaststoke olympics(men) = 24

Total win olympics(men) of USA is =9

So, Prob of winnig USA 2020 tokyo olympics(men) =9/24 =0.375

b) probability of American will not win the 800 m freestyle in Tokyo is

Total number of 800 m freestyle olympics(men) =55

wining 800 m freestyle olympics(men) =10

lossing 800 m freestyle olympics(men)=45

probability of American will not win the 800 m freestyle in Tokyo =45/55= 0.818181

c) Using above two probability we conclude that the 81% chance of lossing 800 m freestyle olympics(men)

and 37 % chance of wining 100 m breaststroke at the 2020 tokyo olympics (men)

d) Used defination of above question is given below

If a random experiment result in n mutually exclusive and equally likely outcomes ; out of which m are favouable to the event A then the probabilty of occurrence of the event A is defind by p(A) and is given by

P(A) = No of elements belonging to A / Total no of element in the sample space
