Question

An electron with energy of 1-eV is incident on a simple square barrier that is 1 nm wide. Use both the approximate tunneling expression (found in the original tunneling notes) and the exact expression (found in the matrix notes). Calculate the height of the barrier needed for a tunneling probability of 0.1. Repeal for tunneling probabilities of 10-2, 10-3, 10-5, and 10-7. Note that you may have to solve a transcendental equation. As seen before, you may be able to get your calculator to do that for you, or you can probably find the answer with a little bit of trial and error.)

Explanation / Answer

The probability of the particle tunneling through the barrier is proportional to e^-2KL where L is the width of the barrier. T =e^-2 KL T = transmission coefficient.
