Question
A sewer pipe has a flow of 835 gpm and TSS=250 mg/L. an industiral facility discharges a waste stream of methanol into the sewer at a flow rate of 100 gpm. The methanol waste stream contains and unkown amount of TSS and 100 mg/L of a toxic compound. Methanol is a liquid with a density of 760 kg/m^3. Downstream of the industrial discharge, the concentration of TSS is 330mg/L.
1.find the concentration fo the toxic compound in the sewer downstream fo the discharge (mg/L)
2.concentratino of TSS in the industrial waste (mg/L)
TSS:total suspended solids
Explanation / Answer
flow rate coming in = flow rate going out since, mass is to be conserved
so,final flow rate= 935 gpm
consider a time period of 1 min
total toxic compound in that perid in downstream= 100 mg/L X 100 gallon
so its concentration in downstream = (100 mg/L X 100 gallon)/935 gallon
= 10.695 mg/L
Let the TSS in methanol be y
250 mg/L X 835 gallon + 100 gallon X y = 935 gallon X 330 mg/L
so y = 998 mg/L
