Question
A car is traveling at 47.0 km/h on a flat highway. e coefficient of friction between road and tires on a rainy day is 0.100, what is the minimum distance in which the 98.6 Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations. m (b) Wha 16.6 Your response differs from the correct answer by more than 10%. Double check your calculations. m at is the stopping distance when the surface is dry and the coefficient of friction is 0.600 Need Help? Talk to a TutorExplanation / Answer
(a) By using equation of motion,
v^2 = u^2 + 2as
Where, v is final velocity = 0
u is initial velocity = 47 km/hr = 13.06 m/s
a is acceleration
s is stopping distance
Now, for acceleration
F = Ff
ma = umg
a = ug = 0.1*9.8 = 0.98 m/s
Acceleration will be negative since, it opposes the motion
0 = 13.06^2 - 2*0.98*s
s = 87.02 m
(b) Here, F = Ff
ma = umg
a = ug = 0.6*9.8 = 5.88 m/s
v^2 = u^2 + 2as
0 = 13.06^2 - 2*5.88*s
s = 13.06^2 /(2*5.88)
= 14.50 m
