Question

7. 14 points OSUniPhys1 6.2.WA.036 My Notes Ask Your Teacher A child leaves her book bag on a slide. The bag, which is at the top of the slide, starts from rest and reaches the bottom in 1.60 s. The mass of the book bag is 3.00 kg, the length of the slide is 2.85 m and the angle of incline is 32.0°. (Assume the tx axis to be parallel to and down the slide. For all values, enter the magnitude only.) (a) With what acceleration does the bag go down the slide? m/s2 (b) What is the friction force acting on the bag? (c) What is the coefficient of kinetic friction between the bag and the slide? (d) What is the speed of the bag when it reaches the bottom of the slide? Additional Materials eBook

Explanation / Answer

Given,

t = 1.6 s ; m = 3 kg ; L = 2.85 m ; theta = 32 deg

a)from eqn of motion

S = ut + 1/2 at^2

2.85 = 0 + 0.5 x a x 1.6^2

a = 2.23 m/s^2

b)Ff = mg sin(theta) - ma

Ff = 3 x 9.8 x sin32 - 3 x 2.23 = 8.89 N

Hence, Ff = 8.89 N

c)we know that

Ff = u N

Ff = u mg cos(theta)

u = Ff/mg cos(theta) = 8.89/3 x 9.8 x cos32 = 0.36

Hence, u = 0.36

d)we know that

v = u + at

v = 0 + 2.23 x 1.6 = 3.57 m/s

Hence, v = 3.57 m/s
