Question
7. +-10 points TiplerS 27,PO81.soln. My Notes A long, straight wire carries a current of 11-15.4 A as shown in the figure. A rectangular coil with two sides parallel to the straight wire has sides 5 from the wire. The coil carries a current of 12 = 6.33 A. and 10 cm with the near side a distance 2 cm 5 cm- 10 cr 2 cm (a) Find the force on each segment of the rectangular coil due to the current in the long, straight wire. top segment left segment bottom segment right segment NDirection NG-Direction ! N -Direction- (b) What is the net force on the coil? NDirection- eBookExplanation / Answer
Given, I1=15.4 A I2=6.33 A
The magnetic field due to Long wire carrying current I1 is µ0I1/2d , where d is the distance at which the value of B is needed
Force on any segement is µ0I1I2/2d d is the distance between I1 and I2
a)
TOP SEGMENT
F1= µ0I1I2/2*ln(7/2) upwards
F1= 1.556*10-5 N upwards
LEFT SEGMENT
F2= µ0I1I2/2d {d=0.02 m}
F2= 9.7482*10-4 N Right hand side
BOTTOM SEGMENT
Same as part a) but in the opposite direction
F3= 1.556*10-5 N downwards
RIGHT SEGMENT
F4= µ0I1I2/2d {d=0.07 m}
F4= 2.7852*10-4 N Left hand side
b)
Force on top and bottom will cancel each other out because they are equal and opposite
net force=F2 -F4 = (9.7482*10-4 - 2.7852*10-4) Right hand side
= 6.963*10-4 N on the Righthand side
