Magnetic Plelds and Forces CHAPTER 24 24-7 24.5 Magnetic Fields Exert Forces on Moving Charges 17. For each of the following, draw the magnetic force vector on the charge or, if appropriate, write "F into page," "F out of page," or"F 0." a. e. xx1f. 18. For each of the following, is the charge positive or negative? Write a + or a -on the charge ??-91 140 Fisto page iso page 19. A positive ion, initially raveling into the page, is shot through the gap in a magnet. Is the ion deflected up, down, left, or right? Explain. Plato page 20. A positive ion is shot between the plates of a parallel-plate capacitor a. In what direction is the electric force on the ion?

Explanation / Answer

The only rule that is followed in questions 17, 18 is

F = q V x B

Note the direction iof F is in the direction of cross product of V and B.

How to get the direction of F:

If q is positive: Use right hand rule to get the direction. Place your right hand fore fingers in the direction of velocity(v) and curl your fingers in the direction of magnetic field (B). The thumb direction when curling the fore fingers is the direction of force (F)

If q is negative: use the previous method and reverse the direction to find the direction of force (F).
