Given,

a) Apply law of conservation of momentum

momentum gained by projectile = momentum gained by canon in opposite direction

mp*vp = mW*vW

vp = mW*vW/mp = 2.50*0.61/0.24 = 6.35 m/s  (Ans)

b) Energy released, delta_E = 0.5*mw*vw^2 + 0.5*mp*vp^2

= (0.5*2.50*0.61^2) + (0.5*0.24*6.35^2)

= 5.30 J  (Ans)
