Question
A tank is constructed of a series of cylinders having diameters of 0.30, 0.25, and 0.15 m as shown in the figure. The tank contains ethanol, oil and water. Ethanol is exposed to air. A mercury manometer is attached to the bottom. Determine the manometer reading, h
Explanation / Answer
Ethanol and manometer both are exposed to air so
extra prssure by liquid will be equaled by height of mercury h.
=> p1g*0.1 + p2*g*0.1 + p3*0g*0.2 = p4*g*h
p1 = density of ethanol = 789 kg/m^3
p2 = density of oil = 918 kg/m^3
p3 = density of water = 1000 kg/m^3
p4 = density of mercury = 13600 kg/M^3
=> Puuting these values
=> h = 0.1*(789+918+2*1000)/13600 = 0.027 m
=> h = 0.027 m = 2.7 cm
