Question

1. The front suspension of a vehicle is shown below. The force exerted on one tire is 3600N. Calculate the horizontal and vertical force components at points A and B.

2. The hoise shown is powered by a motor at point I. Cable segment BE is vertical, and segments EG and IB are horizontal. If W=10kN, determine the reactions at point A, and the force supported by members CFG and DFH. *(Note: Each of the pulleys is connected to another member through apin connection. A FBD of a pulley can be drawn to determine the pin forces supporting that pulley. For example, draw a FBD of the pulley at H to calculate the horizontal and vertical force components at H. Those force components can be drawn equal and opposite on the FBD of member DFH.)

Explanation / Answer

In a right angled triangle,

sin %u03B8 = opposite side / hypoteneuse and

cos %u03B8 = adjascent side / hypoteneuse

==========================

In the given pendulum, the force exerted by the string on the pendulum

is along the stdring ( hypoteneuse).

The force is resolved into two components one along the horizontal and the other along the vertical.

Now you can see clearly that the vertical side is adjascent to the angle %u03B8 and the horizontal is NOT adjascent to the angle.

Adjascent implies cos and hence the vertical component is F cos %u03B8.

Then the horizontal one must be of sin.

Since the vertical component balances the weigth of the pendulum = mg

F cos %u03B8 = mg = 64*9.8 = 627.2

F = mg /cos %u03B8 = 64*9.8 / cos 8 = 633.4 N.

The horizontal component is F sin 8 = 633.4* sin8

=88.15 N.

1. Vertical component is 627.2 N.

2. The horizontal component is 88.15 N.

3. The tension or force along the string is 633.4 N

==================================

The above is for your knowlledge, where as the problem is solved simply

since the vertical component = the weight mg = 627.2 N and

tan %u03B8 = horizontal / vertical component.

Horizontal componet = vertical * tan %u03B8 = 627.2* tan 8

= 88.15 N.
