Question
1. The following statement is similar to those you might see on exams. Write a paragraph of 3-5 sentences describing 1) whether the statement is correct or incorrect and 2) the reasoning for your answer. Your answer should demonstrate your understanding of the physiological concepts underlying the statement and be written professionally. Two metal object a large one and a small one, have the same temperature and are in direct contact with each other. Over time, there will be net flow of hea energy from the large object to the small object due to conductionExplanation / Answer
1) The statement is INCORRECT.
2) Reasoning: When both the objects are at same temperature then zeroth law states that both will be in thermal equilibrium. Means no heat transfer will take place between the two.
If one sphere were at higher temperature, its electrons must be vibrating/moving with higher kinetic energies. When they come into contact with electrons with colder object, due to collision the energy of high temperature electrons get transferred to low temperature elctron This is the fundamental process of conduction.
But here since both objects are at same temperature, their electrons must be moving with same kinetic energies. Hence there is no scope of energy transfer among them when they collide.
Size of object will not decide energy transfer. It will be decided by temperature difference.
