Question
Describe climate change and describe how it affects biodiversity (i.e. how it can lead to endangered or extinct species).
You will have to make some choices here. I would like you to provide a general overview, but then focus on 2-3 aspects of the issue. Remember to illustrate your points using real-life examples.
• How conservation biologists are working to eliminate, reduce, or adapt to climate change. (Not all of these options will apply to all three causes – for example, there might not be any “adapt” solutions that apply to the one you describe.)
Explanation / Answer
1). Biodiversity is the existence of a variety of plant and animal species together in a variety of ecosystems. This also includes the organisms that belong to the different species or same species. The biodiversity is important because it is crucial for the food chain to occur in a regulated manner. Biodiversity increases the productivity of the ecosystem, more diversity means, more species can exist.
1). The following are the four observable climate change effects that occur due to Global warming.
(i) Increased temperatures on earth.
(ii) Increased occurrence of floods
(iii) Increased sea levels
(iv) Decreased food production and increased poverty
The temperatures on Earth are being raised dramatically in the 21st century, and its effects can be observed clearly by means of melting of ice at the Polar Regions, increasing sea levels, increased rate of occurrence of floods and other natural disasters, etc. The increased temperature also increases the death rate of humans and cause exhaustion of certain animal species. Prevalence of certain diseases increases with increase in temperature. The malnutrition increases due to decreased food production and poverty. Polar bears are listed as endangered speceis because of decreased polar region due to global warming.
The increased deforestation, industrialization, increased release of global warming gases into the atmosphere increased the temperature and also disturbed the climate cycle in many regions. We can clearly observe the reduced water reserves, and decreased rain falls in many regions. Some species are being extinct due to the raised Global temperatures, the biodiversity is being lost.
