Question
A thin wire (diameter-15um) is placed between the ends of two microscope slides (n= 1.5) forming a wedge shape. They are illuminated by light (-550nm) at normal incidsence. Assuming the slides are thick enough that the effect of the upper reflection from the top slide and the bottom reflection from the bottom slide have no impact; 3. a. How many bright fringes appear in the reflection from the wedge? b. If fluid with an index of refraction of n 1.5 fills the space between the slides, how many bright fringes appear in the reflection?Explanation / Answer
when there is no water , air n=1 fills the gap between the slides
d=15 *10^-6 m
Wavelength = 550 *10^-9 m
since angle = 90
d = number of bright fringe * wavelength
number of bright fringes = 15*10^-6/ 500*10^-9 = 30
in second case
number of bright fringe = 30/1.5 = 20
