Question
A.A 1,933-kg car going 7 m/s through a parking lot hits and sticks to the bumper of a stationary 1,797-kg car. Find the speed of the joined cars immediately after the collision.
B. A 86-tonne (1 t = 1000 kg) spacecraft moving in the +x-direction at 0.52 m/s docks with a 91-tonne craft moving in the -x-direction at 0.57 m/s. Find the velocity of the joined craft. Give your answers in m/s.
C.A runaway toboggan of mass 6.2 kg is moving horizontally at 23 km/h. As it passes under a tree, 11 kg of snow drops on it. What is its subsequence speed? Give your answer in m/s
Explanation / Answer
(A) APplying momentum conservation,
(1933)(7) + (1797 x 0) = (1933 + 1797) v
v = 3.63 m/s
(b) pi = pf
(86 x 0.52) + (91 x - 0.57) = (86 + 91) vf
vf = - 0.04 m/s
velocity is 0.04 m/s in the -ve x direction.
(c) pi = pf
(6.2 x 23) = (6.2 + 11) v
v =8.29 km/h
v = 8.29x 1000 m / 3600s
v =2.30 m/s
