PHYSICS EXPERIMENT 36-1 E.MAGNETIC FIELDS SECTIONPAGE-2 PART II Magnetic Field of Moving Charges 6.5ummarize the observations for the four trials when the wire is held in a north-south direction and the compass is used to test the field direction. 7. Complete the diagram in Figure 3 by show ing the orientation compass needles and the magnetic lines of flux around the wire when (a current is out of the plane of the paper and (b) the current is into the paper of the ) the COMPASS FIGURE 3 Magnetic Field Around Currents in Vertical Wires 5. Describe the results of your tests of the polarity of the faces of a single loop or wire and the result of reversing the current direction. 9. Summarize the effects of current magnitude, permeability of the core, and number of turns of wire on the field strength of an electromagnet GENERALIZATIONS: 1. State the law of magnetic poles

Explanation / Answer

6)

The right hand rule is a trick for remembering the direction of a magnetic field generated by a current in a wire. The compass is showing you what direction the magnetic field is in, so you can use the right hand rule to work out whether the current is flowing north to south or south to north.
