Question
PHYS2326 (University Physics 11) (Fall 18) HW 2: Electric Flux and Gauss's law Assigned Date: Thu, Sep 13 Due Date: Fri, Sep 21 1. A lat sheet of paper of area 0.25 m is oriented so that the normal to the sheet is at angle of 60 to a uniform electric field of magnitude 14 NC. (a) Find the magnitude of the electric flux through the sheet. (b) For what angle 0 between the normal to the sheet and the electric field is the magnitude of the flux through the sheet is largest and smallest? 2. A point charge q -4.00 nC is located on the x-axis at x 200 m and a second point charge q -6.00 nC is on the y-axis at y 1.00 m. what is the total electric flux due to these two point charges through a spherical surface centered at the origin and with radius (a) 0.50 m (b) 2.50 mExplanation / Answer
Solution:
1) Electric Flux thru the sheet = EA cos theta = (14)(0.25)(cos60) = 1.75 N m^2 /C
b) It is Maximum (Largest) for theta = 0 and
the flux is smallest for +- 90 degrees.
2 a) Since No charge is enclosed in this region, total flux there = 0 since 0.5 m is less than 2m & 1m.
b) Flux = q2/eo = (-6x10^-9) /(8.85x10^-12) = -678 Nm^2/C
3) E = kq /r^2 and Flux = EA
