PHYSICS Examination 5- Cont in As your textbook indicates, Archimedes was an ancient Greek philosopher. According tradition, he discovered what has come to be called Archimedes Principle in the coure ofSt trying to solve a dilemma posed to him by King Hiero of Syracuse. Pl St 31 30 ing to King Hiero had provided pure gold to a goldsmith to fashion a crown. When the crown was finished, it had the same mass as the gold the king had supplied. Nonetheless, the king suspected that the goldsmith had stolen some of the gold. The king believed the goldsmith had mixed a cheaper metal, silver, into the crown to replace the gold he had taken. The king asked Archimedes to analyze the crown and determine if the goldsmith had cheated Archimedes knew that silver was less dense than gold. He, therefore, asked for a mass of gold equal to the mass of the crown. He then put the gold in a container, filled the container to the brim with water, and removed the gold. 32. (A) What happened to the water level in the container when the gold was removed? Why? (B) Archimedes then took the crown fashioned by the goldsmith and carefully lowered it into the container of water. What should have happened to the water level if the crown had been made of pure gold? When Archimedes lowered the crown into the container, the water overflowed. What did this indicate about the volume of the crown compared to the volume of the mass of gold? Did this prove or disprove that the goldsmith had cheated the King? Why? (C) 70

A) When gold will put in to the water then water will overflow. the amount of water of overflow is equal to the amount of water displaced by gold. after removing the gold level of water in brim will decrease as some of the water has overflowed.

B) If the crown would have been of pure gold then not a single drop of water will flow. since the density is same also the weight is same that means mass is same hence volume of water displaced will be same.

C) It is indicating that volume of crown is more as compared to the volume of pure gold.since volume is more for same mass it means density is less as compared to the pure gold. & hence he cheated the king.
