Question
The bulbs in the circuit shown are identical. Treat the battery as ideal in answering all the questions.
2 The bulbs in the circuit shown are identical. Treat the battery as ideal in answering all the questions Rank bulbs 1-6 in order of brightmess. Explain your reasoning. a. 4. b. Rank the voltages across the bulbs. Explain your reasoning. c. Write an equation that relates the voltage across bulbs 3, 5, and 6 to the battery voltage. d. Bulb 1 is removed from its socket. Does the brightness of bulb 2 increase, decrease, or remain the same? Explain. i. Does the brightness of bulb 6 increase, decrease, or remain the same? Explain. ii. iii. Does the brightness of bulb 3 increase, decrease, or remain the same? Explain.Explanation / Answer
a) 6, ( 4 0r 5), 3 ( 1 0r 2)
The maximum current is through 6 , say I
The current through 4 and 5 are equal and = I/2
The current through 3 is 2I/3 and current through (1 &2) is I/3
3 is brighter than 1or 2
b) In the order and reason. as given below.
Volt across 6 = RI = V say
Volt across 3 = 2IR/3 = 0.66 V
Volt across 4 = volt across 5 = IR/2 = 0.50V
Volt across 2 = volt across 1 = IR/3 = 0.33 V
C) If E is the battery voltage
E = V (1 +0.66 +0.5 + 0.33) = 2.49 V
V = E/ 2.49
Hence
Volt across 6 = RI = E/ 2.49
Volt across 5 = 0.50V = 0.2 E
Volt across 3 = 2IR/3 = 0.27 V
D) 1 No current passes through bulb 2. It is off.
2. Total resistance increases and hence current decreases through 6 and brightness decreases .
3. Current through 3 increases and is the same as in 6 and hence its brightness increases .
