wondering if anyone can help with this question (anatomy 2)?
Certain diets can cause immense changes in the body's usage of its 3 primary fuel sources. The low carbohydrate diet has been is a primary example of a diet that causes extreme changes in bodily condition. A) Using 1-2 Primary clinical sources, describe what side effects, positive or negative, (besides weight loss) are seen in people on diets such as the "Paleo" diet for long periods of time? (Cite your sources!) Include possible changes in the metabolism and cardiovascular system? B) Describe how differences between 2 popular high proteins diets (ie Atkins vs Paleo) differ in regards to fruit ingestion, and how this difference affects changes in metabolism seen in these 2 diets?Explanation / Answer
The question is extremely interesting from a social as well as a clinical point of view.
a) A low carb diet is one in which the body gets very low amount of carbohydrates in a day. A number of people choose this diet because it is simple; people just have to restrict the carbohydrate intake as opposed to changing diet drastically. Now, the scientific reasoning behind this is that because of the lower glucose availability, the body will be directed away from fat storage and towards fat digestion. The side effects of this type of diet is majorly ketosis which means that there are a number of ketones released in the urine. Thus this type of diet is referred to as the low carbohydrate ketogenic diet (LCKD) and in extreme cases, very low carbohydrate ketogenic diet (VLCKD). Metabolic state of a person following such a diet is compared to that of a starved person. When glucose levels of such people were observed, it was seen that it initially dropped and then it returned to the original baseline and muscle glycogen reduced by around 20% in 9 days. Also, there is consistent reduction in fasting serum triacylglycerols and a fairly consistent increase in HDL cholesterol, but little change in total or LDL cholesterol. Several outpatient diet studies have shown reductions in CardioVascular Disease risk factors after an 8–12-wk LCKD, during weight loss, and during weight maintenance.

b) Atkins and Paleo are both low carb diets. Atkins is considered to be the father of all low carb diets. Both diets allow huge amounts of fruit ingestion. the difference between the two is that Atkins is more strict compared to the Paleo, it allows only 50g of carbs per day which does not leave much room for fruits. Fruits contain lot of fibre so ofcourse less fruit intake does affect your digestion negatively
