Question
Modern communication technology has brought us Internet connectivity just about anywhere on the planet. One very useful tool has been WiFi on airplanes. Communicating with a moving target is significantly more difficult than communicating with something that is stationary, especially an object that is traveling at 600+ mph.
1. Define, discuss and describe what technologies are currently in use for Wifi on airplanes. There are currently two mainstream methods in use. Describe how each accomplishes the same task using different communication techniques.
Explanation / Answer
As discussed in question there are mainly 2 methods by which we get WiFi on airplanes. They are -
(1.) Mobile towers on land
(2.) Satellite in space
Getting WiFi or internet connection from mobile towers was used initially, as it was cheap. But as we know that planes fly through water bodies and oceans having on towers on them , as a result the internet connectivity was lost while traveling through seas and oceans.
Then came the technology of getting signals from satellites. These satellite are placed in geo stationary orbit of earth. The planes send and receive signals from satellite by a device placed beneath the fuel tank. The speed of internet received from satellite is around 12 Mbps and is almost uninterrupted throughout the journey. Hence it is an effective and reliable way of getting internet facilities.
