Question

Two blocks each of mass m = 4.00 kg are fastened to the top of an elevator asin the figure below. (a) If the elevator accelerates upward at 1.6m/s2, find the tensions T1 andT2 in the upper and lower strings.
T1 1 N T2 2 N
(b) If the strings can withstand a maximum tension of 96.0 N, what maximum acceleration can the elevatorhave before the first string breaks?
3m/s2 (a) If the elevator accelerates upward at 1.6m/s2, find the tensions T1 andT2 in the upper and lower strings.
T1 1 N T2 2 N
(b) If the strings can withstand a maximum tension of 96.0 N, what maximum acceleration can the elevatorhave before the first string breaks?
3m/s2 T1 1 N T2 2 N

Explanation / Answer

The equation for first block          T1 - m1g - T2 =m1a      -1 for second block      T2 -m2g = m2a    -2      ==> T2 = m2 (g + a) = 4 * 11.4 = 45.6N Now substituting this in eq - 1, we get           T1 = m1( g +a) + T2                = 4(11.4) + T2                = 45.6 + 45.6                 = 91.2 N (b) a = [T1 - m1g - T2] / m1           = [96 - 39.2- 45.6] / 4           = 2.80m/s2
