Question

Two blocks are sliding along a frictionless track. Block A (mass 4.97 kg) is moving to the right at 2.90 m/s. Block B (mass 5.96 kg) is moving to the left at 3.48 m/s. Assume the system to be both Block A and Block B.

What is the total momentum of the system before the collision? Left or Right

What is the total momentum of the system after the collision? Left or Right

The two blocks stick together and move off together. What is the magnitude and direction of the velocity of the blocks after the collision?

Explanation / Answer

Here ,

let the right direction be positive ,

initial momentum = 4.97 * 2.90 - 3.48 * 5.96

initial momentum = -6.328 Kg.m/s

the total momentum before collision is 6.328 Kg.m/s LEFT

after the collision , using conservation of momementum ,

momentum after collision = -6.328 Kg.m/s

the total momentum after collision is 6.328 Kg.m/s LEFT

let the speed be u

(4.97 + 5.96)* u = 6.328

u = -0.58 m/s

the velocity is 0.58 m/s ,to the LEFT
