A block of mass m1= 125kg starts with an initial velocity ofv=82m/s up the ramp. It slides for a distance of x=10.0m along theramp which has a coefficient of friction of k=.150 and thenis launched off the end of the ramp. The ramp makes an angle of=/6 with respect to the horizontal. I am needing to draw a free body diagram for the m1 but cantseem to get the forces in the right spot. I so far havegravity going down, normal force up and force of friction to theleft. What is the force to the right (up the ramp)?Explanation / Answer
mg is down as you said. Force normal is NOT up. It's perpendicular to thesurface of the ramp. Friction is not completely to the left. Friction'sdirection always opposes the direction of motion, so frictionis down the ramp. There is no force going up the ramp. The block slidesbecause of Newton's 1st Law. An object in motion tends tostay in motion unless acted upon by a force. The block wouldlike to keep sliding up forever, with no loss of velocity.
