Question
A small object with a mass of 410 mg carries a charge of 25.0 nCand is suspended by a thread between the vertical plates of aparallel-plate capacitor. The plates are separated by 5.00 cm. Ifthe thread makes an angle of 17.0° with the vertical, what isthe potential difference between the plates?i calculated the tension of the wire by t=mg/sin(17) and got avalue of .00140 i then calculated the tension in the x directioni.e., tx= tcos(17). since Ex = force/Q i used the value of Tx/charge of 25 nC to get the Ex value than i multiplied value by .05m to get the voltage potential my answer was with the 10 percentvalue of the correct answer so im assuming that my method wasn'tcompletely messed up. just wanted to get some feed back on where imight have gone wrong.
Explanation / Answer
taking the net forces in the vertical componentto be zero we get Fy = 0 T cos17.0o = m g T = m g / cos17.0o Fx = 0 q E = T sin17.0o = m gtan17.0o E = m g tan17.0o / q we know that V = E d V = m g d tan17.0o / q = ..........V
