Question

Need answers to all questions. Thank you.

When charge A is placed 6 mm from charge B, it experiences a attractive force of 3.6 N. Match the following distances between charges A and B with the force that charge A feels 2 mm 12mm 18mm Consider the above arrangement of charged objects. We want to make sure that q_4 has zero net force on it. (You can ignore gravity here.) In that case, what can we say about the charges on q_1 and q_2? q_1 and q_2 must both be negative. q_1 and q_2 must both be positive. q_1 must be negative and q_2 must be positive. q_1 must be positive and q_2 must be negative.

Explanation / Answer

1. F = k q1 q2 / r^2

F r^2 = constant

(3.6) (6^2) = F (2^2)

F = 32.4 N ......Ans (when 2mm)

when 12 mm :

F = ( 3.6) (6 / 12)^2 = 0.9 N

when 18 mm:

F = (3.6) (6 / 18)^2 = 0.4 N

2. q3 is pulling q4 to the left.

so net force due to q1 and q2 have to be to the right.

for that they need to be positive charge

Ans: q1 and q2 must both be positive.
